| Resumo | The recent availability of Indian IRS-P6 (LISS III sensor) satellite images provided by INPE, enabled the use of a new data source for studies in the Amazon region. The images produced by LISS III sensor have 23,5 meter spatial resolution and radiometric resolution of 7 bits. Thus, this study aimed at the land cover mapping in the Tapajos National Forest and surroundings, using LISS III images and the PRODES methodology. To this end, we generated soil, vegetation and shade fraction-images through the Linear Spectral Mixture Model. The soil fraction image was masked twice, with the deforestation polygon/area of PRODES 2009 (which included all deforested areas since 1988), generating an image of the area outside the polygon (with, theoretically, no deforestation) and an image of the area inside the polygon (showing the fate of deforested areas). Those images were segmented and classified with the non-supervised ISOSEG algorithm. In relation to the outer area it was found an increase of 1.5% in deforestation areas in comparison to PRODES and the detection of 409.5 km2 of forest degradation (2.6% of area). In the classification of the area inside the deforestation area mapped by PRODES, only around 33% remained as deforested/clearcut areas. Of the remainder, 38.6% corresponded to secondary vegetation. Thus, the use of the LISS III image was effective for the classification of the area, allowing identification of an increase of deforestation areas in comparison to Landsat-TM used by PRODES, and the use and occupation under the current deforestation polygon accumulated since 1988 and maped by PRODES. |
